My name is Trish, and welcome to the first post of my blog. I’m being forced to write this by my well-meaning friends at work who are getting very tired of me saying, “I’m going to start my blog this weekend”, but never actually doing so. We work in social media marketing so there are already plans in place to monetize the shit out of this site once it takes off. @Bacardi, I'm for hire!
I moved to the West Coast nearly 4 years ago from Ohio, and I currently live and work in sunny Santa Monica, CA. I’m a data and operations director at a marketing company, and when I get home I’m usually mixing up a cocktail and something delicious for dinner, and watching Netflix with my boyfriend and our two cats. I’m analyst by day, boring person by night.
My kitchen/cocktail philosophy is to use fresh, seasonal ingredients, avoid food and packaging waste, and to create variations on staples that are easy to keep on hand. I like to make as much stuff from scratch as possible, but also I’m human and I have a demanding job, so I will take shortcuts when it makes sense.
I’m going to post a lot of cocktail recipes, some desserts, and the occasional salad when my doctor starts harping about that whole fatty liver thing. I’ll share some pointers about how to stock a pantry or bar and come up with easy, adaptable recipes that work with what you have. I’ll write about life in SoCal, my friends and family, films and books, and other musings as they occur. Also, since there’s a clear dearth of cat pics on the internet, I will share some of my own.
Anyways, it’s 5:04pm and you did not come here to read about me so let’s get down to bizness!
I’m going to break in this bad blog with a Honey Lemon Drop Martini, because I remember very distinctly making one about 2 years ago and thinking to myself, “I’m pretty certain everyone I know will be super interested in this,” so I posted it on Instagram. Five likes later, I fancied myself a budding social media superstar and started posting regularly. Also, honey and lemon are very wholesome so this will be a great choice when you are suffering from the flu but still need a cocktail.
I’m using a variation of this recipe, which is excellent but has a few ingredients I don't normally keep on hand. Oranges really cut the tartness of this recipe and allow for natural sweetness. The rest comes from honey, Limoncello, and a sugared rim on your glass. I tend to make my drinks less sweet than you might get from a bar, so if you like extra sweet, I’d suggest adding more honey. Lastly, if you have citrus vodka on hand, feel free to substitute about half for the vodka for an extra lemon kick.
Honey Lemon Drop Martini - 2 servings
½ cup vodka
¼ cup Limoncello
Juice of one lemon
Juice of one orange
1 tsp honey
Soda water (I highly recommend Lemon La Croix)
Add the vodka, Limoncello, juices, and honey to a cocktail shaker with ice and shake until the shaker is very cold. Take one of your juiced lemon halves and run around the rim of two martini or coupe glasses, then dip the rim into granulated sugar. Strain with a fine mesh strainer into two glasses, and top with soda to taste. Post on Instagram and tag yourself in a trendy nearby bar.
