You know you're a cocktail blogger when you run across a bag of blood oranges and squeal in delight out loud in Trader Joe's..... when you're shopping alone. To be honest, I get excited about a lot of things at TJ's, so I have to bring my boyfriend along to "share" in my excitement each time something delicious comes into season, lest I seem like a local crazy lady.
I've been experimenting with cardamom recently - it's excellent infused in gin and shaken with grapefruit (recipe forthcoming) and it's just a really versatile, complex, warming spice that adds a note of exotic flavor to any drink.
Spiced Blood Orange Bourbon Sparkler
1oz Rosemary Cardamom Simple Syrup (recipe below)
2oz fresh squeezed blood orange juice
Soda water to taste
Add the first three ingredients to a shaker with ice and shake until ice cold. Strain over ice in a rocks glass and top with soda water to taste (as always, I used La Croix). Garnish with an orange wheel and a sprig of rosemary.
To make the Rosemary Cardamom syrup, add equal parts sugar and water to a saucepan (I did a half cup of each and it was enough for about 4 or 5 drinks). Add two or three sprigs of fresh rosemary and a small amount of cardamom seeds. A little goes a long way with cardamom! I used about 8 or 10 seeds for a subtle spice.
